Een portretserie bij het Leger des Heils

Hoe doorbreek je de stigmatisering rond de bewoners van het Leger des Heils? Met de fotoserie ‘Meer dan je situatie’ legt de Maastrichtse fotograaf Joris Hilterman (1993) het accent op de mens achter zijn of haar situatie. Geïnspireerd op het project van Jan Sitvast, (hoogleraar Hogeschool Utrecht) genaamd ‘Kijk mij nou’. Hierbij is fotografie ingezet als een herstelgerichte methodiek bij psychiatrische patiënten.

 Met ‘Meer dan je situatie’ wilt Joris benadrukken dat elke bewoner van het Leger des Heils een eigen persoonlijkheid heeft. Aan de hand van portretten verbeeldt hij dat het onmogelijk is om de bewoners onder één noemer weg te zetten. De serie is dan ook bedoeld als een uitnodiging, een manier om voorbij eigen vooroordelen te kijken. Het geven van een ander perspectief kan volgens hem bijdragen aan de destigmatisering rondom de bewoners. Juist door de bewoners met zo min mogelijk context te portretteren, hoopt hij vooral de mens te laten zien. Zowel aan de kijkers als de bewoners zelf. Elke bewoner heeft dan ook een afdruk gekregen van zijn of haar portret.

 Joris stelt ook dat zijn kijk is veranderd: “Ik was bevooroordeeld over de bewoners van het Leger des Heils. Maar door het contact met de mensen die daar wonen, zijn veel van deze vooroordelen veranderd of verdwenen. Hoewel vooroordelen hebben misschien iets natuurlijks is, geloof ik dat het altijd goed is om te kijken of deze terecht zijn.”

'A portrait series at the Salvation Army'

How do you break through the stigmatization of the residents of the Salvation Army? With the photo series 'More than your situation', the Maastricht based photographer Joris Hilterman (1993) emphasizes the person behind his or her situation, inspired by the project of Jan Sitvast, (professor of Hogeschool Utrecht) called 'Look at me now'. Hereby photography has been used as a restorative method in psychiatric patiënts.

With 'More than your situation' Joris wants to emphasize that every inhabitant of the Salvation Army has a personality of its own. On the basis of portraits he imagines the impossibility of putting away the residents under one denominator. The series is therefore intended as an invitation, a way to look beyond own prejudices. According to him, giving a different perspective can contribute to the destigmatization of the residents. It is precisely by portraying the residents with as little context as possible that he hopes to show the human in particular. Both to the viewers and the residents themselves. Every resident has received a print of his or her portrait.

Joris also states that his view has changed: "I was prejudiced about the residents of the Salvation Army. But through contact with the people who live there, many of these prejudices have changed or disappeared. Although prejudices may come naturally, I believe it is always good to see if they are justified. "
