Instrumenten

 English version below

Instruments

This collection contains scientific laboratory instruments and old tools, devices and equipment for gas, water and electricity. A large portion of the collection can also be consulted digitally.

Formation of the collection
After converting from a municipally owned company to a PLC, the Maastricht public utilities wished to preserve the old tools, equipment and devices that were no longer in use for future generations. It was also around then that renovations and reorganisations were being carried out at the municipal secondary school and the monastery school in Maastricht. This work left behind a number of old laboratory instruments no longer in use and for which no suitable storage space was available. In consultation with the two schools, the City of Maastricht and the Utilities Board, it was agreed that the public utilities would keep and maintain the instruments in addition to their own tools and equipment. The instruments from the monastery were donated. At first an institutional loan agreement was signed between the City of Maastricht and the public utilities concerning the instruments from the secondary school. Various items were added to the total collection over the years, obtained from institutions (such as Tricht College, the Aloysius School and L.T.S. Maastricht), installation engineers and private individuals. Centre Céramique has been managing the collection since 2007.

Registration
In 1989 several former employees of the Maastricht public utilities agreed to work on restoring and cataloguing the available items in their leisure time. The public utilities provided a workplace, tools and other resources for that purpose. The items from the collection were initially registered in a registration system (RIM) which was purchased from Limagas. They later switched to Adlib, a software package for professional collection management. This is the same system which is used to manage and display the other municipal collections. The collection was recently made available in digital form as well for online visitors via a browser.

Contents and scope
There are currently around 1500 items that have been restored, catalogued and described. However, there is still a lot of research to be done in order to complete the descriptions. The collection comprises:

  • Old equipment and tools from the gas, water and power networks and plants. One of the most exceptional objects is a piece of glass piping from a network gas line, which dates to about 1850.
  • Scientific instruments from the laboratories of the schools mentioned above. One spectacular piece, for example, is the first x-ray device.

Various old laboratory instruments and machines have been restored to the point that they may be used to give demonstrations.
